The Chinook owes its existence to 1 guy: Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalancet, Nh. The breed derives primarily in one male ancestor born in 1917, named “Chinook,” who had been Walden’s lead dog and stud. “Chinook” based on a crossbreeding of husky stock in the Peary North Pole expedition having a large, tawny Mastiff-like male. Photos of “Chinook” show a drop-eared dog having a broad Mastiff mind and muzzle. Walden’s leader was bred to Belgian Sheepdogs, German Shepherd Dogs, Canadian Eskimo Dogs and possibly other breeds the progeny were bred to him to create the preferred type and was apparently a powerful reproducer of their own traits. Arthur Walden was a skilled dog driver with many years of experience of the Yukon he was lead driver and trainer around the 1929 Byrd antarctic expedition. He’s credited with getting sleddog sport to Colonial with founding the brand new England Sled Dog Club in 1924. The 12-year-old “Chinook” was lost around the Byrd expedition.
